Exposed Aggregate Concrete Sydney

Premium pebble and stone finishes — durable, slip-resistant, and low maintenance

Exposed aggregate is the most popular premium concrete finish in Sydney for good reason. By washing back the top layer of cement paste to reveal the stone aggregate beneath, you get a naturally textured surface that grips underfoot, hides minor marks and tyre rubber, and looks exceptional for decades with minimal maintenance.

About Our Exposed Aggregate Service

Exposed aggregate is the most popular premium concrete finish in Sydney for good reason. By washing back the top layer of cement paste to reveal the stone aggregate beneath, you get a naturally textured surface that grips underfoot, hides minor marks and tyre rubber, and looks exceptional for decades with minimal maintenance.

The finish works particularly well in Sydney's climate — the texture handles rain without becoming slippery, and the natural stone tones complement the sandstone and brick architecture common across the Metro. Unlike pavers that require ongoing re-levelling or tile surfaces that can crack at grout lines, exposed aggregate is a monolithic slab with no joints to weaken.

We use carefully selected aggregate mixes — river pebble, quartz, crushed granite, and seeded decorative stones — and can match colours to complement your home's existing palette. Every exposed aggregate job is sealed on completion to lock in the colour and protect the surface.

Exposed Aggregate Options We Offer

Every project is different — we match the right specification to your needs and budget.

River Pebble Aggregate

Smooth, rounded river stones in natural tones — cream, tan, brown, charcoal. The most popular exposed aggregate finish across Sydney residential projects.

Included in standard exposed aggregate pricing

Quartz Aggregate

Crushed quartz crystal gives a sparkling, high-contrast finish that catches the light. Popular for pool surrounds and feature areas.

Small premium over river pebble

Seeded Aggregate

Decorative stone, shell, or coloured glass is hand-seeded into the surface for a bespoke pattern. Used for feature strips, borders, and accent areas.

Non-slip aggregate finish ideal for pool surrounds — grips wet feet, is cool underfoot in summer, and resists pool chemicals and chlorine.

From $120/m² labour

Our Exposed Aggregate Process

What to expect from the first call to finished product.

1

Aggregate selection — we present sample boards of available aggregates and colours so you can choose the right mix before we order

2

Subgrade prep and formwork — area excavated, compacted, and formed up; reinforcement laid to spec

3

Pour and consolidate — concrete placed and screeded level; aggregate distributed evenly across the surface

4

Surface retarder application — a chemical retarder is applied to the surface to slow the top layer's set while the body cures

5

Expose and seal — once the body has set, the surface paste is washed away to reveal the aggregate; the slab is then sealed to protect and enhance colour

Site preparation is the biggest variable

Excavation, demolition and spoil removal routinely make up 25–40% of a concreting job and can't be priced accurately without seeing the site. Answer these three questions as best you can — your estimate widens or narrows accordingly.

Estimated Range (incl. GST)

$11,102 – $17,902

$278–$448/m² all-in

Site inspection needed to firm this up

  • You're not sure what excavation is needed — this is the single biggest variable in the price.

Exposed Aggregate — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Sydney homeowners and builders.

How much does exposed aggregate concrete cost in Sydney?

Exposed aggregate in Sydney typically costs $120–$140/m² for labour, plus concrete supply. A complete 40m² driveway with N25 concrete, mesh reinforcement, and sealing in the metro zone runs approximately $7,500–$9,000 including GST — around $50–70/m² more than a standard broom finish driveway.

Is exposed aggregate slippery when wet?

No — the textured pebble surface is naturally slip-resistant, making it significantly safer than a smooth trowelled finish in wet conditions. This is one of the main reasons it is preferred for pool surrounds, alfresco areas, and driveways across Sydney.

Does exposed aggregate need sealing?

Yes — we apply a penetrating or film-forming sealer on completion to lock in the aggregate colour and protect the surface from staining. Resealing every 3–5 years maintains the appearance and extends the slab life. A quality sealer also makes the surface easier to clean.

How do I clean exposed aggregate?

A standard garden hose or pressure washer on low pressure is all you need for routine cleaning. For oil or tyre rubber stains, a concrete degreaser works well. Avoid acid-based cleaners which can etch the aggregate and cement paste.

Can exposed aggregate be repaired if it cracks?

Minor cracks (hairline to 2mm) can be filled with a matching coloured caulk or polyurethane sealant. Larger structural cracks need investigation of the root cause (usually sub-base movement). Like all concrete, exposed aggregate is not immune to cracking — proper sub-base prep and expansion joint placement minimise the risk significantly.

Related Concrete Services

Concrete Driveways Sydney

A properly laid concrete driveway is one of the highest-return upgrades you can make to a Sydney home. Unlike pavers, which shift and weed over time, or asphalt, which softens in summer heat, a concrete driveway is structural, permanent, and low-maintenance for decades.

Pool Surrounds Sydney

The area around a Sydney swimming pool takes more punishment than almost any other surface on the property — constant wetting and drying, chlorine contact, UV exposure, bare feet, and occasional impact. It needs to be non-slip when wet, visually appealing, and durable enough to last decades without constant maintenance.

Coloured Concrete Sydney

Coloured concrete uses iron oxide pigments mixed through the concrete batch before it's poured. Unlike a surface paint or stain, the colour runs the full depth of the slab — it cannot peel, flake, or wear off because it's in the concrete itself. In Sydney's UV-intense climate, this makes it a far more durable aesthetic choice than any surface-applied colour treatment.

Decorative Concrete Sydney

Decorative concrete — also called pattern-imprinted, stamped, or stencilled concrete — gives you the high-end look of slate, cobblestone, timber, or terracotta tile at significantly lower long-term cost than real paving. The pattern is pressed into the concrete surface while it's still plastic, creating a permanent, monolithic finish without the joints, movement, and weed problems that pavers develop over time.
