Concrete South West Sydney
Reactive clay and new estate fill
South West Sydney sits on reactive clay from Bringelly shale, the same ground that causes movement in older driveways across Western Sydney. The area also has a lot of new land-release estates, where the lot has been cut, filled and compacted by the developer; those sites are usually level but the fill still has to be checked before concrete goes on it. Summers are hot and dry, so pours are booked early in the day and the slab is cured properly to stop it drying too fast and cracking.

Campbelltown Residential Vehicle Crossing Terms and Conditions
Crossing & approvals
Lodge a Residential Vehicle Crossing Application; council inspects, issues levels and conditions, and work can't start until approval is issued. A formwork inspection (formwork, mesh, expansion joints and sub-base in place, 24 hours' notice) and a final inspection are compulsory. Uninspected crossings are treated as illegal.
Campbelltown Crossing Terms, Compulsory Inspections 1–3Crossing & approvals

Campbelltown Crossing Terms, 5.1Concrete finish
Crossings are 125mm thick minimum with F62 mesh at 50mm cover, at least 25MPa, broom finished with bullnosed edges. Other materials need council approval case by case, the layback and kerb must be plain concrete, and council only ever repairs in plain concrete.

Camden Council
Camden DCP, 4.2 General Residential Development Controls
Crossing & approvals
Generally one driveway per property. A second crossing won't be considered on frontages under 20m wide or within 6m of the kerb tangent at an intersection, and driveways should be as small as possible, especially across the verge.
Camden DCP, 4.2.10 Parking, Garages and Site AccessGarages & parking
Garage doors can take up no more than 60% of the front of the house on lots 12.5–15m wide and 50% on lots over 15m. No triple garages on lots under 12.5m, and lots 7m wide or less must have rear-lane garages.
Camden DCP, 4.2.10 Parking, Garages and Site AccessGarages & parking
Where parking is reached from the front boundary, at least one car space must be behind the building line.
Camden DCP, 4.2.10 Parking, Garages and Site AccessGarages & parking
Garages and carports must be at least 1m behind the building line of the house and at least 5.5m from the road.
Camden DCP, 4.2.4 Setbacks, Table 4-2Front setback
Front setback is the average of the two nearest houses on the same side of the street. Without two within 40m, it's 4.5m on lots up to 900m², 6.5m on 900–1,500m² lots and 10m on larger lots.

Rules that apply anywhere in NSW
A driveway, hardstand or paving on your own land is exempt from planning approval only if it isn't in a heritage conservation area, on a heritage item, in a foreshore or environmentally sensitive area, drains to an existing stormwater system, and is built to AS/NZS 2890.1. Otherwise it needs a DA or CDC.
NSW Codes SEPP, exempt development: driveways, pathways and pavingAnything built on or over the footpath or road, including the vehicle crossing and layback, needs approval from the council (or Transport for NSW on State roads) under the Roads Act 1993, even when the work on your land is exempt or already approved.
NSW Codes SEPP, exempt development: driveways, pathways and pavingDriveway grades follow AS/NZS 2890.1: generally no steeper than 25% (1 in 4) within the property, and any change in grade over 12.5% (1 in 8) needs a transition, usually about 2m long, so cars don't scrape.
AS/NZS 2890.1, as applied in Hunters Hill Council's driveway specification
Checked October 2026. Councils update their controls and site-specific controls can apply, so confirm with council or your certifier before you build.
