Concrete Retaining Walls Sydney

Structural walls that hold ground, control erosion, and outlast the alternatives

A concrete retaining wall needs to do one job extremely well: hold back the weight of retained soil without moving. When it fails — and failing retaining walls are common across Sydney's hilly terrain — the consequences range from a slumping garden bed to a structural emergency affecting neighbouring properties.

About Our Retaining Walls Service

A concrete retaining wall needs to do one job extremely well: hold back the weight of retained soil without moving. When it fails — and failing retaining walls are common across Sydney's hilly terrain — the consequences range from a slumping garden bed to a structural emergency affecting neighbouring properties.

We build concrete retaining walls across Sydney Metro using either poured-in-place reinforced concrete or concrete block construction. Both approaches are structurally sound when designed correctly, built with proper footings, and include adequate drainage to relieve hydrostatic pressure behind the wall.

For walls over 1m high (and in many LGAs, over 600mm high), structural engineering and council approval are required in NSW. We work with your structural engineer and certifier, or can recommend engineers experienced in Sydney residential retaining work.

Retaining Walls Options We Offer

Every project is different — we match the right specification to your needs and budget.

Poured Concrete Retaining Wall

Monolithic concrete wall formed and poured in situ. Maximum strength and durability. Best for walls over 1m tall, curved walls, and situations requiring a smooth or formwork-textured face.

Quoted per linear metre based on height and design

Concrete Block (Besser Block) Wall

Concrete masonry blocks laid in courses and reinforced with rebar and grout fill. Flexible in layout, easier to stage in phases, and provides a built-in textured face.

Quoted per linear metre based on height

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Wall

Precast concrete sleepers spanning between galvanised steel or concrete H-posts. Cost-effective for lower walls (up to 1.5m), and can be installed without heavy machinery on difficult access sites.

From $350/linear metre for 900mm height

Stepped Terracing

Multiple lower retaining walls creating stepped terraces, rather than one tall wall. More affordable for significant level changes and creates usable flat areas in the garden.

Quoted on site design

Retaining Wall Footings

If you're supplying your own wall materials, we can install the concrete strip or pad footings and drainage layer to the engineer's specification.

From $200/linear metre

Our Retaining Walls Process

What to expect from the first call to finished product.

1

Design and engineering review — for walls over 600mm, structural drawings are reviewed before quoting; we advise on whether engineering is required for your wall height

2

Excavation and footing trench — existing ground excavated; footing trench dug to the engineer's specified depth and base compacted

3

Footing pour — strip or pad footings poured in N32 concrete with rebar starter bars positioned for the wall reinforcement above

4

Wall construction — wall formed and poured (poured concrete) or block-laid with rebar and grout infill (block wall); drainage pipe installed at base

5

Backfill and drainage — gravel drainage layer placed behind the wall, drainage pipe outlet to daylight, compacted backfill placed in controlled lifts

Retaining Walls — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Sydney homeowners and builders.

How much does a concrete retaining wall cost in Sydney?

Retaining wall costs in Sydney vary significantly by height, length, access, and wall type. As a guide: concrete sleeper walls at 900mm height cost approximately $350–$500/linear metre; besser block walls at 1.2m height run $450–$650/linear metre; poured concrete walls at 1.5m height cost $600–$900/linear metre. All prices include footings and drainage. Engineering fees are additional.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in Sydney?

In NSW, retaining walls over 600mm high generally require a development application or complying development certificate. Some councils have lower thresholds (400mm) or specific requirements near boundaries. Walls over 1m almost always require structural engineering certification. We can advise on your specific LGA's requirements.

Why is drainage behind the wall so important?

Water trapped behind a retaining wall creates hydrostatic pressure — which can push the wall forward or cause it to slide on its footing. A gravel drainage layer and drain pipe at the base of the wall allows water to drain away rather than build up. Failure to include drainage is the most common reason retaining walls fail prematurely.

How high can a retaining wall be without engineering?

In most Sydney LGAs, walls up to 600mm can be built without structural engineering, though they must still comply with development approval requirements. Walls up to 1m may be permissible in some councils as exempt development with specific conditions. Over 1m, structural engineering is effectively universal. Check with your LGA for specific requirements.

Can a retaining wall be built on a boundary?

Yes, but boundary retaining walls have additional requirements — the loads on the wall affect the neighbouring property, so structural engineering, council approval, and potentially neighbour notification are required. Boundary retaining walls also need to be set back from the property line in some LGAs to allow access for maintenance.

Concrete Footings Sydney

Footings are the most structurally critical concrete work on any building project — they transfer the entire load of the structure into the ground. Getting them wrong means cracked walls, sticking doors, and expensive remediation years down the track. Getting them right means a building that performs for its full design life.

Concrete Slabs Sydney

A concrete slab is the foundation of nearly every Sydney construction project — from a backyard shed to a new house. Getting the slab right means getting the grade, reinforcement, thickness, and subgrade preparation correct from the start. Cut corners here and you're fixing cracks and movement for years.

Concrete Paths Sydney

A well-laid concrete path does more for a property than most owners expect — it improves accessibility, creates visual order in the garden, reduces mud tracking, and adds kerb appeal that shows up in property valuations. Unlike paving, gravel, or timber, concrete paths are permanent, weed-free, and require no maintenance beyond an occasional clean.

Shed Base Concrete Sydney

A concrete shed base is one of the most straightforward concrete jobs on a residential property — but it still needs to be done right. An unlevel base causes the shed frame to rack and twist, doors that won't close, and water pooling inside. A slab without a moisture barrier causes rust on tools and fittings, and eventual structural deterioration of the shed floor framing.
