Concrete Pool Surrounds Sydney

Non-slip, durable concrete surrounds that look great and handle constant wet use

The area around a Sydney swimming pool takes more punishment than almost any other surface on the property — constant wetting and drying, chlorine contact, UV exposure, bare feet, and occasional impact. It needs to be non-slip when wet, visually appealing, and durable enough to last decades without constant maintenance.

About Our Pool Surrounds Service

The area around a Sydney swimming pool takes more punishment than almost any other surface on the property — constant wetting and drying, chlorine contact, UV exposure, bare feet, and occasional impact. It needs to be non-slip when wet, visually appealing, and durable enough to last decades without constant maintenance.

Concrete is the most practical and cost-effective pool surround material available in Sydney. Unlike travertine or porcelain tile, it won't loose individual units over time. Unlike timber decking, it won't rot, splinter, or require annual sanding and oiling. A properly finished and sealed concrete pool surround typically outlasts the pool shell itself.

We install concrete pool surrounds across Sydney Metro, working around new pool installations or replacing existing surrounds. We can match existing paving colours, complement new landscaping, or create a feature finish with exposed aggregate or decorative patterns.

Pool Surrounds Options We Offer

Every project is different — we match the right specification to your needs and budget.

Broom Finish Pool Surround

The most practical choice — consistent grip in all directions, easy to clean, and complementary to any pool tile or coping colour. Cost-effective and long-lasting.

From $85/m² labour

Exposed Aggregate Pool Surround

River pebble or quartz aggregate gives excellent wet-grip, stays cool underfoot in summer (cooler than plain concrete), and looks premium. The most popular upgrade for pool surrounds.

From $120/m² labour

Coloured Concrete Pool Surround

Through-body coloured concrete to complement pool tiles, coping, and fencing. Charcoal grey and sandstone are popular for Sydney pool areas.

From $100/m² labour

Decorative / Travertine-Look Surround

Pattern-imprinted concrete achieving the look of travertine, slate, or stone tile — without the grout joints that harbour algae and the individual units that can shift or crack.

From $160/m² labour

Combination Surround

Feature strip of exposed aggregate or decorative pattern at the pool edge transitioning to broom or coloured concrete in the wider surround area. Creates visual interest while managing budget.

Our Pool Surrounds Process

What to expect from the first call to finished product.

1

Site assessment — we review the pool shell coping level, drainage outlets, existing surface, and any raised bond beam or garden edging that affects the surround level

2

Demolition and subgrade prep — existing tiles, pavers, or old concrete removed; base compacted and formed to correct falls away from the pool

3

Expansion joints — foam expansion joint material installed at the junction with the pool coping and at regular intervals to accommodate movement independently of the pool shell

4

Pour and finish — N25 concrete placed and finished to specified texture; surface sealer or non-slip additive applied where required

5

Sealing and curing — sealer applied to protect the surface from chlorine, UV, and staining; surround protected from pool water for 7 days minimum

Pool Surrounds — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Sydney homeowners and builders.

How much does a concrete pool surround cost in Sydney?

A standard concrete pool surround in Sydney typically costs $100–$160/m² all-in, depending on finish. A typical 40m² surround around a standard rectangular pool runs $5,500–$9,000 including GST. Exposed aggregate and decorative finishes sit at the higher end of that range.

Is concrete safe and non-slip around a pool?

Yes — broom, exposed aggregate, and textured concrete finishes all provide excellent non-slip grip when wet. AS 1926.1 requires pool surrounds to meet minimum slip resistance values. Broom and exposed aggregate finishes comfortably exceed the minimum requirements. Smooth float finishes are not appropriate for pool surrounds and we won't recommend them for this application.

Will chlorine from the pool damage the concrete?

Pool-grade concrete is not significantly affected by typical pool water chemistry. However, concentrated pool chemicals (chlorine, acid used for pH adjustment) spilled directly on the concrete can cause surface etching over time. A penetrating sealer helps resist chemical ingress. We advise rinsing any chemical spills with water promptly.

Do you need expansion joints around a pool?

Yes — this is one of the most important details on pool surround work. The concrete surround must be able to move independently of the pool shell or cracking will occur at the coping interface. We install foam expansion joints at the pool-surround junction and control joints at intervals through the slab.

How long before we can use the pool after the surround is poured?

The concrete surround should be kept dry (away from pool water and rain runoff where possible) for at least 7 days to allow adequate surface curing. After 7 days, light foot traffic is fine, though we recommend 28 days before placing heavy furniture or subjecting the surface to continuous wetting.

Related Concrete Services

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Sydney

Exposed aggregate is the most popular premium concrete finish in Sydney for good reason. By washing back the top layer of cement paste to reveal the stone aggregate beneath, you get a naturally textured surface that grips underfoot, hides minor marks and tyre rubber, and looks exceptional for decades with minimal maintenance.

Coloured Concrete Sydney

Coloured concrete uses iron oxide pigments mixed through the concrete batch before it's poured. Unlike a surface paint or stain, the colour runs the full depth of the slab — it cannot peel, flake, or wear off because it's in the concrete itself. In Sydney's UV-intense climate, this makes it a far more durable aesthetic choice than any surface-applied colour treatment.

Decorative Concrete Sydney

Decorative concrete — also called pattern-imprinted, stamped, or stencilled concrete — gives you the high-end look of slate, cobblestone, timber, or terracotta tile at significantly lower long-term cost than real paving. The pattern is pressed into the concrete surface while it's still plastic, creating a permanent, monolithic finish without the joints, movement, and weed problems that pavers develop over time.

Concrete Slabs Sydney

A concrete slab is the foundation of nearly every Sydney construction project — from a backyard shed to a new house. Getting the slab right means getting the grade, reinforcement, thickness, and subgrade preparation correct from the start. Cut corners here and you're fixing cracks and movement for years.
